Final Destination 5 (2011)

A group of young people survive an accident and escaped fate.  So fate comes after them to finish them off.  You can’t out run fate forever.

Can you believe we are at number 5 of the Final Destination remakes.  It’s the same old theme, nothing new or different.  Just fun with killing characters off in new and hopefully surprising ways.

I usually enjoy the Final Destination flicks.  It is what it is.

Never Back Down 2 – The Beat Down (2011)

Not much can be said about this one, it’s about young good looking guys beating each other, in and out of the ring.  It’s neither great or all that bad, as well as not being real deep.

The lead is played by Dean Geyer, who can currently be seen in the TV series Terra Nova.  As an actor he’s allowed a lot more depth of character in this movie than on Terra Nova.  He actually gets to act in Never Back Down 2, as well as look good of course.  In Terra Nova he’s a one dimensional soldier used for little more than background unfortunately.  Without him, this movie would be a total waste.  If you are a fan of Dean Geyer, or a dedicated fight movie fan, it’s worth a watch.

Horrible Bosses (2011)

A comedy of three friends, each with an over the top horrible boss.  Who hasn’t had a horrible boss at one point in your life?  But you probably didn’t plan to kill them.  Well here you can live the dream vicariously though the movie characters.

A good old style fast moving comedy.

Fright Night (2011)

Anyone old enought to have seen the original Fright Night movie in the 80’s will likely enjoy this remake.  The original was excellent in it’s time and is arguably a classic.  Modernized and I think a little less tongue-in-cheek, it basically has most of the same feel and combination of qualities of the first; light comedy, mild horror, action and suspense.  We even get a brief cameo from the actor that played the vampire in the 80’s version.

Part of my rating is likely due to the movie being based on the classic original, but still an excellent vampire spoof.

Cowboys and Aliens (2011)

Not the cowboys and indians movie you may have grown up with.  This is much more politically correct.  The minority to be picked on here are the aliens.  Infact, the old moral of “why can’t everyone just get along” comes into play.  The cowboys and indians make nice and gang up on the poor little murdering aliens.  The enemy of my enemy is my friend.  Well they kick alien ass and send them packing.

It just goes to show you, no matter what our level of technology, we can always overcome a more intelligent race that comes to Earth.  We do it in the movies of modern day, and we do it in the movies in the olden day.  Don’t mess with the humans.

It’s well done and a fun watch, no matter how ridiculous the Sci-Fi concept.

HP Touchpad eBay Sale

Yesterday at 6pm Central Time, HP was having what they hoped to be a secret promotion to blow out some more Touchpads.  I say secret only because the reports were that HP was trying to keep it under their hat, so that their employees could have the first shot at them.  But the news got out and there were postings on many blogs about the sale.  If HP really wanted to do their employees a “Favour” and offer them purchases first, why would they stick them on the eBay store?!  That’s not a favour, it’s more a slap in the face in my opinion.

I tried to purchase a 32BG model starting at 6pm, and was unable to.  In less than an hour they were apparently sold out.  All but 2 attempts I made gave me eBay error messages claiming the items were unavailable, discontinued, or some other generic error message.  On 2 occasions I got my item sent to PayPal for purchase, only to have it say the item is no longer available.  The whole time the sale counter kept climbing.  When the counter stopped climbing, the page simply stopped responding, no other indication that itmes were sold out.  It appeared to stop at the total sales quantity amount of 2771 or 2763.  Those 2 numbers would alternate on browser refresh.  So if this sale was even for real, they only had about 2700 32BG items to sell.

Personally I’m very unimpressed with how poorly the eBay servers handled this sale.  I rarely buy on eBay, and now I have another reason to not waste my time.

Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon

Unlike sequel number 2, this continuation hits the spot.  Be prepared for two and a half hours mind you.  But other than the first half hour or so, which drags out way too long, this is a fun action packed ride.  Definitely an enjoyable action movie.

I couldn’t help but notice that all the machine fighting action in sequel 3 was slowed down and made viewable.  Unlike sequel #2 that was painful to watch, due to the drink-blender spinning of seemingly random polygons that was supposed to be the action scenes.  Someone obviously realized the mistakes made and had them put some effort into making it watchable this time.  Both that and some actual storey line this time around gives us a decent action flick.

Green Lantern (2011)

Considering all the hype about this movie, and seeing pre-release trailers long in advance of it’s debut, I was shocked at how poor this movie turned out to be.

I was not familiar with this comic book hero, assuming it is actually based on a comic book, so I can’t compare it to the original concept.  So based on no preconceived notion, I felt I was watching a bad remake to the movie The Mask with Jim Carrey, from 1994.  This super hero’s special powers are the ability to make comic book style objects appear, not unlike in The Mask.  He magically creates race tracks, machine guns, brick walls, and alike.  Instead of a mask he has a magic ring.  Unlike The Mask, this storey has no depth at all.  It’s written for 8 to 10 year old boys.  Yes Ryan Reynolds is hot and nice to look at, and that’s the only redeeming quality we are left with.  Other than young boys perhaps, adults and girls will have no interest in this shallow and poorly written yawner.  The women in this movie are chronically miserable and bitchy, and when in trouble frightened and helpless.  Hardly role models for modern day girls.

I was looking forward to seeing the Green Lantern, and saddly disappointed with what a steaming pile it turned out to be.

30 Days of Night: Dark Days (2010)

A sequel to “30 Days of Nights”, which was actually a better vampire/mild horror movie than I had expected.  But this sequel is definitely not!  Boring, poorly written, and quite obviously cobbled together to simply take advantage of being a sequel and the current vampire popularity.

Don’t waste your time on this, sink your teeth into something better.

Scream 4 (2011)

Scream 4 is actually a lot of fun.  Simply because it doesn’t take itself or any of the slasher films it makes fun of too seriously.  It’s a comedy/horror movie that is well made with some good actors, walking the line between a serious role, satire and graphic slash horror.  They pull it off and it’s a fun watch for those that enjoy this style.  I loved it.
